“Alpha and Omega” is a new movie 3D on the new movies list this fall. Unfortunately, 3D notwithstanding, it’s a pretty standard romantic comedy (with wolves). It’s full of really stupid jokes that kids will surely like but some of this upcoming movie will be too frightening for the youngest viewers. This film is just not good enough to be worth the extra cost of a ticket for a 3D movie.

Because there are so many adult movies playing in theaters this fall, this kid’s movie is sure to be a box office movie success. “Alpha and Omega” was released by Lionsgate and opens on September 17th.

This new movie is a Burbank-Mumbai co-production from an Indian corporation, Crest Animation. The background of the movie has a flat, old-fashioned quality that will appeal to some as the CGI shows characters, running, jumping, flying and dancing. Luckily for “Alpha and Omega”, the voice cast is great, including one of the last performances of actor Dennis Hopper.
The two main characters are Humphrey, voiced by Justin Long, and his old friend Kate, voiced by Hayden Panettiere. They are wolves and live in Jasper National Park in Canada. Kate’s an alpha wolf, who will soon be a leader, and Humphrey is a raggedy omega wolf. Their hunting territory is being encroached upon by a pack of wolves from the east. The leader of the Jasper National Park Pack, Winston, Kate’s father, and voiced by Danny Glover, is ready to give Kate to the son of the other pack’s leader, Tony, voiced by Dennis Hopper.

Soon park rangers move Kate and Humphrey to Sawtooth National Forest to repopulate the forest with wolves. Humphrey is quite happy to be relocated with Kate, but Kate feels that she must return to Jasper and marry Tony’s son Garth, voiced by Chris Carmack. On their journey Kate learns all about having some fun and Humphrey does a good job of protecting Kate. In the meantime, Kate’s sister, Lilly, voiced by Christina Ricci, who is a lovely and shy Omega wolf with lavender eyes, falls in love with Garth herself. This romance is actually more exciting than the romance between Kate and Humphrey.

There are a few musical interludes included in the film by the directors of Alpha and Omega, Anthony Bell and Ben Gluck, that fall flat. There are some examples of wolves chasing caribou that will be frightening to very young kids. Kate’s mother, voiced by Vicki Lewis, is also an odd and violent character that no one will enjoy.

The comedy in the movie is provided by a French goose who plays golf, voiced by Larry Miller and an English duck, voiced by Eric Price. Waiting for these scenes gives the grownups who’ve taken their kids something to look forward to.
